Pungeni Nkone operate in two areas under different circumstances, a privately owned Registered pure Nkone herd based on leased grazing near Norton, west of Harare, and a Community Project founded in 2015 and running an unregistered herd of 150 Gaza Nguni cattle to directly benefit the Mahenye Community on the Savé River Valley on the Mozambique border in the Southeast Lowveld.

The Registered Herd was founded in 2018 in conjunction with Mark Hook’s Have Hook Nkone and the two herds are still running together at Norton. Our foundation stock was sourced from Ian Patullo’s Anglesea Nkone at Matopos near Bulawayo, the home range of Nkone, and originated from the original foundation Nkone breeding herd established at Tsholotsho in 1946.

Our intention is to bull a herd of 50 SP Registered Nkone breeding cows at Norton. We are also embarking on a project to create our “Super Sanga” herd here, beginning with the 2025 bulling. The Super Sanga will eventually comprise varying percentages of Nkone, Mashona and Tuli Sanga breeds to create cattle exploiting the best traits of these three breeds. There is a need for this type of well adapted and productive animal in Communal and Small-Scale farming areas and Commercial farms. Our Registered Nkone herd will be kept intact.

We will continue to always concentrate on producing highly efficient adapted cattle that can remain productive on natural veld with minimum artificial inputs. There will be an exchange of genetics between the Registered Nkone and the Gaza Nguni at Mahenye, and possibly Super Sanga and the Gaza Nguni in the future.
